My submission to Studio 23's mixtape exhibit. "The Mixtape You Never Received" is a collection of songs whose meanings have drastically changed. The theme for this stemmed from an actual mixtape I made for someone who is no longer in my life. The songs on it (a few of them are part of the tracklist below and others have been added) had one meaning when I was making it. I was never able to give them the mix and while I was looking through it recently, I saw that the songs inadvertently had their meanings changed. Listening to it now, the songs no longer gave me the elated feeling of the time, but rather a dark and different meaning - ironic track choices and all. So I thought why not recreate it for this exhibit?

With the exception of Pete Yorn, I've not heard of any of these artists. That surprises me, what time period are we talking?
The time period I first made it was from early to mid 2007. Some of the tracks have been added or changed since then.
At the Stars is a Richmond rock band reminiscent of the Smiths, U2, etc.
Amit is a new artist but the song just hit the nail on the head when I listened to it.
Plushgun is a Brooklyn synth pop act and the song is from 2006.
Mobley was just a random track I came across that fit the theme perfectly (in hindsight of course)
Earlimart's "Happy Alone" - (then: are we happy alone with each other?; now: am i happy alone without them?)
The Mae track is from the original mix. We both loved Mae and this was our favorite track. It holds new meaning now that they're gone.
The Alarmists song "Light a Smoke" hit home because we constantly argued over my smoking habits.
Samantha Mollen is a classical pop singer. "Closer to you" is from 2006.
Raine Maida is the lead singer of Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace and this song is from his solo album released last year.
