Best songs of the year

The end of the year is in sight and I look back at the music that flooded my ears and lifted me up in 2007. Thanks to friends, bloggers, songs on TV and connections with bands, my musical sphere expanded more than I could have imagined. So in no particular order and without rhyme or reason (well maybe there's some reasoning behind them), I present to you my favorite tracks of 2007:

Amy Winehouse - Rehab from Back To Black (buy)
There was no escaping this song this year. It's way too damn catchy. This album is up for Best Album of the Year. I think it's funny that she's more known for her alcoholism and drug use than her music.

Passenger - Needle in the Dark, live version; original from Wicked Man's Rest (buy)
Just thinking of this song sends chills down my spine in anticpation of listening. This live version from the Komedia Club in Brighton, UK is even better than the studio version. The intensity of singer Mike Rosenberg's voice is more dramatic in this version.

Wilco - Either Way from Sky Blue Sky (buy)
The guys in Wilco delivered with their latest album, but nothing can compare to the opening track. And nothing can compare to hearing this song live.

The Bravery - Time Won't Let Me Go from The Sun and the Moon (buy)
Cynical lyrics with a poppy beat. I think those are some of the best types of songs.

Smashing Pumpkins - Tarantula from Zeitgeist (buy)
I don't care what anybody says. Billy Corgan can do no wrong. He could make children's music and it would still be gold.

The Higher - Insurance? from On Fire (buy)
A big thank you to James from Appetite For Distraction for introducing me to this song three days ago. Very catchy upbeat track.

Cartoon - Drowning in Normal from Conclusions of Grandeur (buy it somewhere)
These guys contacted me and said "Hey, listen to our new song." And so I did.

Kelly Clarkson - Sober from My December (buy)
Shut up.

Jesse Malin - NY Nights from Glitter in the Gutter (buy)
I have to thank my buddy Jeff for getting me into Malin. Go check out his cynical and sarcastic look at city life over at Tobacco Avenue.

Bloc Party - The Prayer from A Weekend in the City (buy)
Okay, I'll be honest. I heard this song in a promo commercial for the TV show Smallville. But thanks to that stupid promo, I was introduced to Bloc Party.

Band of Horses - No One's Gonna Love You from Cease to Begin (buy)
I first heard this song being played live in an overcrowded venue while I was infatuated with a girl nearby. Listen to the words. Perfect situation? I think so.

Justin Nozuka - Down in a Cold Dirty Well from Holly (buy)
Justin's press people informed me of his upcoming album. I hope to hear more from him in the coming year.

Thrice - The Whaler from The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II: Fire and Water (buy)
Another Christmas present from James. Holy crap. This is so un-Thrice like. There's no screaming and heavy guitars. I may have to go back for more of this album.

Modest Mouse - Dashboard from We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank (buy)
I know this album was promoted heavily with the "mainstream-indie" crowd, but Marcy from Lost in Your Inbox introduced it to me first. And I loved it, despite the constant radio airplay.

Hey! Three songs are from me! Woo!

The Thrice album, as the title suggests, is on two discs. Fire has what you would think of as "Thrice-type music" and Water is a lot more mellow.

god help us, occasionally the mainstream gets it right! : )

i, too, think it's funny that amy winehouse is known as much for her non-musical antics as her music. i only recently listened to back in black, and it's pretty good, but knowing so much about her personal life kind of makes it weird to listen to.
