Yesterday I decided very last minute to see Wilco perform at the Charlottesville Pavilion. I've never been a huge Wilco fan, but have always enjoyed their stuff. And I was in the area on business and figured what the hell...
I've been told that a Wilco show is like two shows in one and that live Wilco is 10 times better than studio Wilco. I will just say that I will never doubt people again when it comes to Wilco.
First off, the venue was perfect. Outdoor setting plenty of standing room. The band played many of many favorite tunes (although "She's A Jar" was nowhere to be found). Highlights included a 6-year-old girl being pulled onstage to sing and dance to "Hummingbird" and Jeff Tweedy telling everyone that Pittsburgh sucked.
But I think the greatest thing was that every time they say goodnight and left the stage, they would come back a minute later and play another encore, or as I like to call it "The Wilco Concert part 2."
I left the show tired but happy and high on the goodness that is Wilco. Or maybe that was all the smoke in the vincinity. I don't know.

I've seen some great shows in Charlottesville recently - Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan - but Wilco beats them all in my book. I saw them at the same venue in April, 2006 and they were great, but they outdid themselves this time. These guys just seem to love to play and they flat out rock. The evergy that comes off the stage is amazing and their lead guitar player is superb. Highlights for me were "Impossible Germany" and "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" but they hit the mark with every song. Aside from wanting to smack the folks who insisted on talking during the show, the evening was perfect.
I'm with Anonymous--nothing has ever surpassed a live Wilco show.
I was close and up front as well, next to Lilac Rain and her family. She's eight years old, actually, and this was her 4th time onstage!
I've posted a pic of her moment onstage at my blog.
glad you enjoyed the show!
